We recommend that puppies come in for their first visit at 8 weeks of age and return weekly to become properly acquainted with their groomer and the environment.
The first 16 weeks of a puppy's life is crucial to their development and knowledge of what is safe in the world around them. This allows them to understand that regular grooming is a normal part of life and not a scary punishment.
Sometimes life can become hectic and we can get behind on taking care of things. This may result in matting in your dog's coat. Matting isn't always easily brushed out. Sometimes brushing out mats can lead to pain, lesions, and fraying of the hair cuticle. Shaving is the safest, most pain-free way to remove matting.
When matting gets wet, it reacts like a sweater and shrinks, causing the matting to become more like a pelt that is tigher and more painful. Matting also traps moisture close to the skin and can result in sores and infections.
When a pet gets groomed, their entire body is examined. Regular grooming can be anywhere from every 1, 2, 4, and 6 weeks. This is typically more frequent than your pet sees the vet. Your groomer can tell you if they see anything that has changed regarding your pet's health and well-being. Clean skin and hair also keeps your dog feeling great and can help prevent infection and other complications.
A double coated dog has a different hair life cycle and structure than a long coated dog. Double coats are designed to protect the skin and body from the elements including extreme temperatures because dogs do not perspire like humans do. Shaving your double coated dog can result in hypothermia, overheating, sunburn, and over time will result in alopecia (balding).
Double coated breeds tend to get compacted when their undercoat is released and caught in their guard hairs. Regular blow outs and brushing can keep the hair's life cycle rolling properly without buildup and allow the skin to breathe, leaving your pooch comfortable and happy. Your floors and furniture will stay nice and hair free too!
We recommend having your dog's nails serviced on a weekly, to bi-weekly basis to prevent overgrowth of the quick and cracking. Keeping their nails maintained can also help with proper posture and prevent foot and leg pain from said poor posture.
